Yoga & Naturopathy

Yoga is an ancient Indian art and science of health and wellbeing on Physical, Mental, Emotional and Spiritual planes of being. Yoga has a history of more than 5000 years. The Sanskrit word yoga is derived from the root yuj, which means to unite. There is a broad variety of yoga schools and practices. The spiritual sense of Yoga has been explained in various Sanskrit texts like Vedas, Upanishads and Bhagavadgita. Later many Yoga Gurus discussed and systematically compiled yoga methods and practices. Some of the famous works include Patanjali Yoga Sutras and Hatha Yoga. Yoga Sutras of Patanjali mainly explains eight types of disciplines namely; codes of conduct (Yama), observances (Niyama), physical discipline (Asana), regulated breathing techniques (Pranayama), controlling sense organs (Pratyahara), concentration (Dharana), meditation (Dhyana) and unfolding higher states of consciousness (Samadhi).

Naturopathy is an art and science of healthy living and a drugless system of healing based on well founded Indian and western philosophies. The term naturopathy was coined in 1895 by John Scheel, and was popularized by Benedict Lust in USA. The practice of naturopathy is based on a belief in the body's ability to heal itself through innate vital energy or force guiding bodily processes internally. Panchamahabhuta theory, Morbid matter theory, vitality and other concepts of Naturopathy explain the health and disease on all planes of being. Hydrotherapy, Massage therapy, Mud therapy, Fasting therapy, Diet therapy are some of the basic treatment modalities in Naturopathy.

Studies have generated evidences on efficacy of various practices of Yoga and Naturopathy as a preventive, adjuvant and rehabilitative medicine. Integration of Yoga & Naturopathy along with the conventional medicine can help in reducing the disease burden and improving health and well-being.
